::Start <<loc>>Ext. - Brighton Seafront Wedding Venue - Late Afternoon<</loc>> <<act>>The sun sinks over the Brighton seafront, casting a pale light on the venue. The charm of the wedding feels borrowed, like the budget didn’t stretch far enough to hold it all together. Waves hit the shore with a quiet persistence. They, like the bride, are trying to keep the evening in motion. She smiles, though it’s thin.<</act>> <<act>>You move unnoticed through the crowd. The scent of sea salt mixes with expensive cologne. Conversations float by—work, family, the same rehearsed stories. Some guests glance at their phones, others at the horizon, looking for a moment of escape. No one’s paying attention, but everyone’s waiting.<</act>> <<act>>You barely know the couple, or anyone here, really. But you’re here for the vibes and the chance to people-watch. <<act>>Zara leans against the terrace railing, the sea breeze brushing against her face. The sunset paints the sky with hues of orange and pink, but the beauty does little to ease the heaviness in her heart. She watches the waves, each one a reminder of time slipping away.<</act>>

<<dia>>Maybe that’s the trap we fell into—thinking that there was a right way to live, a checklist to complete. But life isn’t a checklist. It’s messy and unpredictable, and maybe that’s what makes it worthwhile... if we’re willing to let go of those expectations.<</dia>>

PREAMBLE: This binding agreement, hereinafter referred to as “The Contract,” delineates the unspoken expectations that society imposes upon individuals concerning their personal relationships, as influenced by and reinforcing capitalist structures.

ARTICLE I: THE 'RELATIONSHIP ESCALATOR'
1. All parties are expected to ascend the 'Relationship Escalator' in the following sequence:
a) Dating
b) Exclusivity
c) Cohabitation
d) Engagement
e) Marriage
f) Procreation
2. Deviation from this prescribed sequence may result in social sanctions (see <<link "Annex A">><<goto [[Annex A><
> ), reflecting societal discomfort with non-conformity.

ARTICLE II: TIMELINES
1. Parties must adhere to the following timelines:
a) Find a life partner by age 28
b) Marry by age 33
c) Procreate by age 35
2. Failure to meet these deadlines will result in heightened social pressure, unsolicited advice, and possible financial disadvantages due to missed tax and inheritance benefits.

ARTICLE III: MARRIAGE AND PARTNERSHIPS
1. Marriage, as regulated by the Marriage Act 1949 and the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, remains the pinnacle of all relationships.
2. Married individuals shall receive preferential treatment, including but not limited to:
a) Tax benefits
b) Social validation
c) Enhanced legal rights, such as inheritance and pension claims
3. Civil partnerships, as recognised since the Civil Partnership Act 2004, while progressive, subtly extend the capitalist framework to encompass more relationships under legal scrutiny.
4. Non-married individuals waive their right to complain about the above benefits.

ARTICLE IV: FAMILY PLANNING
1. Upon entering into marriage or civil partnership, parties are required to field invasive questions about procreation plans.
2. Decisions not to have children must be justified repeatedly to family, friends, and strangers, defending against biases entrenched by welfare and social security benefits favouring traditional nuclear families.
3. If you choose to have children, please refer to <<link "Annex B">><<goto [[Annex B><
> for further information.

ARTICLE V: SOCIAL MEDIA OBLIGATIONS
1. Relationship milestones must be publicly announced on at least three (3) social media platforms to affirm societal norms and uphold social standing.
2. Failure to post couple photos at least once a month may be interpreted as relationship trouble, reflecting the commodification of personal life.

ARTICLE VI: SINGLES CLAUSE
1. Single individuals over 30 must have a prepared answer to “Why are you still single?”
2. Singles are obligated to accept all blind date setups proposed by well-meaning friends and family, promoting the idea that partnership is superior to singlehood.

ARTICLE VII: DIVORCE
1. In the event of a divorce, parties agree to be subject to societal judgement and unsolicited analysis of what went wrong, highlighting the social stigma of failing to maintain the capitalist ideal of a stable, consuming family unit.

ARTICLE VIII: NON-TRADITIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
1. Parties in non-traditional relationships agree to explain and justify their choices at every family gathering, continually defending their validity against a backdrop of legal recognitions that prioritise economic stability over personal happiness.

ARTICLE IX: AMENDMENTS
1. This Contract is subject to change based on societal whims and economic pressures without notice.

***By existing in society, you automatically agree to all terms and conditions stated above.***

Preamble: This annex outlines the social and economic challenges imposed on women who become mothers, reflecting the double-edged sword of societal expectations that both demand and penalise motherhood.

Section 1: Professional Penalties
1.1 Career Setbacks: Women who take maternity leave may face career penalties, including being passed over for promotions, receiving fewer opportunities for advancement, and being perceived as less committed to their careers.

1.2 Wage Penalty: Returning mothers may experience a "motherhood penalty" in the form of reduced wages compared to their child-free counterparts, perpetuating gender inequality in the workplace.

Section 2: Social Expectations
2.1 Perfect Motherhood Pressure: Mothers are expected to excel in their careers while also being perfect caregivers at home, leading to unrealistic expectations and social judgement when these standards are not met.

2.2 Criticism for Child-Rearing Choices: Mothers are subject to scrutiny over their parenting decisions, from work-life balance to child-rearing practices, with everyone from family to strangers feeling entitled to offer critiques.

Section 3: Psychological Impact
3.1 Guilt and Shame: Women may experience guilt for not meeting society’s dual expectations of being the ideal employee and the perfect mother, leading to mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression.

3.2 Isolation: The pressures of meeting these conflicting demands can lead to social isolation, as women may feel unsupported or judged regardless of the choices they make.

4.Amendments

While this Annex focuses on the challenges faced by mothers, it is important to note that fathers face penalties too, as detailed in Annex C. However, Annex C has been misplaced due to its brevity. It will likely resurface when it is least expected.
Preamble: This annex outlines the social sanctions imposed on individuals who deviate from the prescribed norms of the "Relationship Escalator" as detailed in Article I of the Contract. These informal but pervasive sanctions reinforce societal expectations within a capitalist framework.

Section 1: Gossip and Speculation
1.1 Whispers and Judgement: Those who deviate from relationship norms may be subject to gossip and speculation among peers, family, and colleagues, who may question their choices and stability.

Section 2: Pity and Concern
2.1 Condescending Sympathy: Individuals who do not conform to societal timelines may receive unsolicited pity and concern from others, implying their life choices are somehow lacking.

Section 3: Maternal Sanctions and Economic Implications
3.1 Maternal Sanctions and Economic Implications: Women who have children may face additional penalties, as detailed in Annex B, reflecting the double-edged sword of societal expectations that both demand and penalise motherhood. While individuals who do not marry or have children may miss out on certain tax benefits, housing incentives, and other economic advantages reserved for traditional family structures, mothers often find that these so-called benefits are offset by significant economic penalties, such as career setbacks and wage reductions, thereby perpetuating gender-based economic disparities.

Section 4: Social Exclusion
4.1 Exclusion from Events: Those who do not follow traditional relationship paths may find themselves excluded from certain social events and gatherings centred around traditional milestones.

Section 5: Psychological Consequences
5.1 Internalised Pressure: The weight of societal expectations can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, with potential impacts on mental health, including anxiety and depression.

5.2 Self-Censorship: To avoid judgement, individuals may censor their behaviour, sacrificing personal authenticity to fit societal norms.

Section 6: Illustrative Scenarios
6.1 Hypothetical Cases:
• The Perpetual Single person: Constant questioning and matchmaking efforts target the individual who remains single beyond a certain age.
• The Child-Free Couple: A couple choosing not to have children faces ongoing speculation about the legitimacy and stability of their relationship.
About this Project
(Grab some popcorn for this section)
This interactive fiction project aims to examine aspects of the UK's uncodified constitution i.e. the laws which all serve to impact UK citizens/residents most intimate relationships through legal (and by extension, economic) mechanisms do not reside within a single constitutional document.

Each of these sources is hosted individually on government websites; to view them, one would need to visit each site or document separately to access the full text and details. Consequently, their scattered documentation across various legal texts potentially obscures their collective impact on society.

That being said, it must be acknwoledged that the uncodified nature of the constitution allows it to be flexible: it can adapt to changing political, social, and economic circumstances without the need for complicated amendment processes. This ensures that the constitution remains relevant and responsive to contemporary issues.

Flexibility also means pragmatic governance, which begets relatively easy changes when constitutional issues arise. This means that the government can address problems quickly and efficiently.

Additionally, the flexibility in the nature of the UK constitution allows for stability. Because changes are typically incremental rather than revolutionary, this gradual evolution allows the constitution to modernise without creating sudden disruptions to the legal and political order.

Crucially, the above also creates an environment where Parliament have a clear path to changing constitutional laws, as needed i.e. democratic control is maintained, as the constitution is under the control of elected representatives, and reflects the will of the people, as expressed through their elected government.

However, despite the positives, one can argue that this structure introduces ambiguity into relationship law by scattering pertinent legal incentives across various statutes, such as the Marriage Act 1949, the Civil Partnership Act 2004, and the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 (HM Revenue & Customs, n.d.-a, n.d.-b).

This dispersion obscures the capitalist agenda by decentralising information, making it challenging for individuals to see how laws enforce capitalist norms and promote traditional relationships as economically ideal units.

It also enables subtle state control over relationships, with scattered provisions promoting traditional forms over others like cohabitation or polyamory, thereby reinforcing capitalist norms without overt disclosure (Civil Partnership Act, 2004; Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, 2013).

This in turn, normalises traditional relationships without revealing underlying biopolitical and economic motivations. It promotes the nuclear family as the ‘ideal’ economic unit and privatises care responsibilities, a key mechanism by which capitalism offloads social reproduction costs onto individuals and families (Rosa, 2023).

In light of the above, this project seeks to contribute to ongoing discussions about the intersection of capitalism, intimacy, and identity in society. It also hopes that
those who play this game will be able to consider for themselves, whether they are comfortable with the status quo, and if not: to consider ways in which they would live differently, where possible.
